Looking for sun and steady winds between 15 and 35 knots? Book your trip to Tenerife Windsurf Solution (TWS) and enjoy one of the 250 sailable days we experience each year! In the meantime, check out the live conditions on our webcams.

Tenerife is the windsurfing capital of Europe. The consistent northeastern tradewinds, known as “Alisio,” make El Médano a year-round windsurfing hotspot. The iconic Montaña Roja (Red Mountain) enhances the wind, funneling it between the mountain and the coastline, increasing its strength.

Weather Condition

Tenerife enjoys a subtropical climate, with temperatures ranging from 20°C to 30°C throughout the year and around300 days of sunshine annually—perfect for watersports.

Minimal RainfaLL

El Médano, on Tenerife’s southern coast, is drier than the north, with very little rainfall during the spring and summer months. Winter may bring brief showers, but they’re usually short-lived.

Consistent Trade Winds

The famous northeastern trade winds, or “Alisios,”blow consistently throughout the year, providing the perfect conditions for windsports.

Wind Strength

Wind speeds typically range from 15 to 35 knots, peaking inwinter, spring, and summer. Even in the winter, the wind is reliable for windsurfingmost days.

Wind Forecast

When checking the forecast, always add 5-10 knots to whatever Windguru predicts in a northeasterly direction. If southerly winds arrive, the baybecomes ideal for freestyle and flatwater slalom, and those winds are often strongerthan forecasted.

Sea Temperature

The water temperature remains comfortable year-round,ranging from 18°C to 24°C (64°F to 75°F). A 2/2 or 2/3mm wetsuit is usually enoughin winter, while in summer, a shorty or no wetsuit is often fine.

Water Conditions at El Médano:

Flat Water

Near the shore, especially in South Bay, the water is calmer, perfectfor freeride windsurfing, beginners, and practicing new maneuvers.

Choppy Water and Waves

Further out, and at spots like Harbor Wall and El Cabezo, you’ll find choppier water and larger swells, ideal for advanced wave riding.

Tidal Influence

The tides aren’t extreme, but they do affect water depth andwave size. Low tides can expose some rocks at El Cabezo, so be cautious when launching or landing. The beach in front of the center is sandy and easy to access.

What does this mean for you?

  • Stable winds from 15 to 35 knots, typically coming from the northeast (wind from the left)
  • Year-round windsurfing! Even in winter, El Médano is the perfect European destination, with air temperatures ranging from 20°C to 32°C.
  • When Windguru predicts a northeasterly wind, add 5-10 knots for a more accurate forecast.
  • Southerly winds also arrive from time to time, transforming the bay into a paradise for freestyle and flatwater slalom windsurfing.
  • You can windsurf barefoot! In winter, all you need is a 2/3mm wetsuit, and insummer, a shorty or lighter wetsuit will suffice
